It can take up to 3-4 weeks to get used to wearing your splint as it can be uncomfortable to wear initially. Persistence is the key to overcome that period.
Some people unknowingly or subconsciously remove their splint during sleep due to the initial discomfort, and wake up to find their splint on the pillow or the nightstand. This can make some people believe that the splint is loose. Please be assured that your splint is not loose as has been customised to fit you. This will stop once your mouth gets accustomed to the splint over time.
You will notice that you will clench or grind more than you did previously while wearing your splint. Remember that the goal of the splint is not to stop clenching or grinding, but to protect your teeth from the negative impacts of clenching and grinding.
Use and cleaning of splint
Please follow the instructions below to care for your splint:
1. The occlusal splint should be worn after brushing and flossing, and should be worn every night.
2. After removing the splint in the morning, use an extra soft tooth brush (without toothpaste) to clean the inside (tooth-side) of the splint.
3. Use water (without a toothbrush) to clean the outside of the splint.
4. Allow the splint to dry and store it in the provided case when not in use.
Soak your splint once in a week or as required in a white vinegar solution (dispense 2 x lids of normal white vinegar with a cup of water). Leave it to soak for approx. 2-3 hours.
It is very important to keep your splint clean to prevent secondary infections. The splint is made of a porous material that can absorb external stains and discolour over time.
Please contact us on 03 5821 2388 if you notice any cracks or holes in your splint for a dentist to assess the damage.
Please also bring your splint with you to your follow up appointments so that your dentist check the fit of your splint and to ensure it is doing its job!
