Post Extraction Instructions

1) Please keep mouth closed under pressure on the gauze pack for at least next one hour.

Generally, you won’t need any more packs but if you start bleeding, best pressure pack can be a tea bag bitten tight in the area of the extraction.

2) Please do not spit or gargle or rinse or brush for today as it may trigger bleeding. Spitting causes negative pressure and withdraws more blood, hence bleeding continues. Please swallow your saliva even if it has blood in it.

3) Please don’t eat or drink anything hot and hard (anything that needs to be chewed on) for today, as it may trigger bleeding again. (Tea, coffee should be avoided, soft food like Banana, yogurt, milkshake or soup at room temperature is alright)

4) Please do not touch the wound with your tongue for next few days as it may carry germs from the tongue to the wound causing increased chance of infection OR may interfere with gum healing causing more painful bone exposure

5) Application of ice-pack done externally on the face in the area of extraction in first 24 hours may help to reduce the pain and swelling. This is usually necessary if the extraction is traumatic. Ice should not be applied more than 10 min in any single application.

6) Please take medicines as prescribed or explained by the Dentist.

7) Smokers- Please avoid Smoking for next 1 week to prevent a complication called “dry socket”. If you have to take painkillers even after 4-5 days of the extraction, you need to call us to make an appointment for check-up.

8) From tomorrow, feel free to eat all types of food but also need to do warm salt water gargles (one-half teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) after every time you eat for at least 5-6 times per day for next 10 days. This prevents food getting stuck in the wound and improves healing.

9) Please start brushing in the area of extraction including the adjacent teeth from tomorrow onwards. Keep the wound clean. Please don’t worry, if you find some blood after brushing, just start swallowing and it will stop. But if you don’t brush in that area, it may cause infection build up in the wound.
